How To Tell If Your Refrigerator Is The Right Temperature
First, it is important to establish the proper refrigerator temperature. Since your refrigerator is divided into two halves, there are two different temperatures to maintain. Acceptable freezer temperature is 0-5 degrees, and 35-40 degrees for fresh food temperature.
Within the fresh food portion of the refrigerator there can be varying temperatures as well. Some crisper drawers can be set to different temperatures depending on the need, while some are set by manual dampers. On the other hand, others are controlled by computers and sensors.
To measure temperature accurately, the first thing to know is that the food temperature is more important than the actual air temperature inside the refrigerator. While air temperatures can vary, food temperatures will be more consistent. An easy way to measure the fresh food side is to put a glass of water in the refrigerator and put a thermometer in the glass, (be sure the thermometer is rated for refrigerator temperatures and that it is calibrated properly). Then give it a few hours to cool down the thermometer before you check the readings.
One fast way to test the temperature of the freezer side of your refrigerator by checking your ice cream. If it's too hard your freezer is too cold, and if it's to soft your freezer it too warm. This is because ice cream seems to keep well within temperatures around 0-5 degrees, which is the perfect freezer temperature.
